InStreatham team does spa!
This month we at the BID team have collaborated with our colleagues at Heart Streatham to road test some of the top beauty spots across our town – it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it! From Hill to the Common, Streatham has an array of spas, salons and wellbeing centres to put a spring in your step. So, ditch the DIY this Easter bank holiday, and read on to find out how to look and feel fabulous with local businesses instead…
The Remedie Rooms
6 Streatham High Road, SW16 1DB, 0208 677 5771, @theremedierooms
One of the longest-established day spas in Streatham, the Remedie Rooms is owned by French entrepreneur Mariama Diallo-Souare, who has created a series of signature treatments in association with a marine laboratory in Brittany. After months of wind and central heating, I wanted a facial. Mariama recommended the Phytomer Hydra-Blue Plumping Moisturising Facial.
This one-hour treatment is designed to treat dehydration and nourish the skin. Therapist Alba took me
downstairs to the Phytomer Treatment Room, which is one of four beautifully designed spaces in a subterranean oasis under our bustling high street. The treatment began with a deeply relaxing back massage and the application of self-heating mud to the spinal column to detoxify the system. It was an
incredibly indulgent and luxurious treatment which is £66.50 for a single session or can be booked as a
course of 5 for £270. I floated back to work with my skin feeling younger and my mind calmer.
Emma Wilson Urban Spa
108C Streatham High Rd, SW16 1BW, 020 8769 9764, @emmawilsonurbanspa
I choose a 60 minutes Fusion Stone Massage at the spa and was fortunate enough to have Emma herself. The massage room was a calming space and Emma talked me through the treatment and made me feel very comfortable.
The massage was thorough, invigorating and de-stressing – all at the same time and Emma ensured I was enjoying it throughout. She used a vegan VOYA organic oil which smelled divine. I was given 15 minutes at the end to just be in the moment and enjoy the benefits of the massage. After dressing I was offered a lovely green smoothie shot and again there was no rush to vacate the Spa. I was also given a little goodie bag with some sample products.
That night I had the most amazing sleep in a long time!
Emma Wilson Urban Spa thoroughly deserves their many awards, including South East Boutique Salon of the Year at the 2017 and London Day Spa of the Year 2018 at the Professional Beauty Awards for their outstanding professionalism, skill, and customer service.
Her Definition
135 Streatham High Rd, SW16 1HJ – 02086773700 @herdefinition
This sleek and spacious salon has a luxurious feel to it. The reception was warm and welcoming, and the service was great. At £40 I was very happy with my wash, cut and blow-dry which included a mini treatment and straightening.
Her Definition has a huge Instagram following and have created some amazing styles for some of the
hippest names in fashion and celebrity. This is a salon based in Streatham but with an international
clientele. They regularly do bridal makeup and makeovers and are part of a creative scene with fashion vloggers and photographers using the base as a venue for photoshoots.
S. Spa @Wellbeing95
95 Streatham Hill, SW2 4UD, 020 8674 7814, @SliqueSpa
S Spa is one of only two spas with an infrared sauna in Streatham. I tried their Bronze Spa Experience package – 30 minutes in the infrared sauna, a 30-minute massage and a 30-minute facial. Infrared saunas use light to heat the body without warming the surrounding air – perfect if you can’t stand hot air
from a regular sauna. I usually last about 10 minutes in a sauna but did this session without struggle. The heat has a meditative effect and prepares the mind for the massage. Therapist Ayshia is a muscle magician who really cares about her clients. Her new Meditation Massage is getting great reviews too – perfect for depression and anxiety.
Finally, I had a Vino Perfect Caudalie facial. By this point, I was half asleep! My skin was soft and
super-glowy, I felt rested than and as light as air, and a week on and still feel refreshed. For £65, that’s a win!
The Leigham Practice
8 Leigham Hall Parade, Streatham High Rd. SW16 1DR, 020 8769 7409, www.leighampractice.com
An established and advanced multidisciplinary therapy centre with award-winning health professionals, the Leigham Practice offers podiatry, physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, acupuncture, aesthetics, and laser therapies. I’m having a course of Laser Facial Rejuvenation – £75 a session with 10% off for courses of 4 or 7 treatments for the price of 6.
True to Leigham Practice form, their beauty therapist, Elena, has worked with both the Vaishaly Clinic and Eve Lom herself. She explained that low-level laser therapy reverses visible signs of ageing and slows the ageing process of the skin – I should begin to see results after four treatments. I’ll be giving you a full report and reveal the before (scary!) and after photos at the end of the course.
Lotus & Lavender
51 Streatham Hill, SW2 4TS, 020 8671 7006, @lotus_lavender_
After such a glamorous refurbishment, we couldn’t help but visit Lotus & Lavender, previously known as American Top Nails. I booked for a Gel manicure appointment over the phone, £28. The staff were welcoming, and my manicure was done by Tommy, who’s taken over the business from his dad. He was friendly and attentive – I’m quite particular with my nails and he was more than happy to grant my requests. The refurbished salon looks lush and vibrant – fitting for their clientele. They’re hoping to have a spa downstairs soon – watch this space!
InStreatham team does yoga!
In the spirit of all things ‘New Year New You’ we were asked by our colleagues at Heart Streatham magazine to help review some of the health and fitness options that our fabulous high street has to offer.
BID manager: “As a yoga returner – I practiced a lot in my twenties – almost two decades later I thought it was about time I reintroduced myself to my toes! So we, the staff team at BID HQ have taken on the challenge of reviewing a selection of new and established Yoga Studios that we have spread along the length of our 2.3miles of continuous high street.”
So whether you live in the hill, central or common ends of Streatham hopefully you can find a local class that is exactly what you need to feel good.
Welbeing95 Yoga Studio & Spa
Ifeoma attended a Power Vinyasa yoga session on a Saturday, 11am.
I booked online, though registering on their booking system was quite long. They’ve many membership options available, all displaying on the Sign Up page before the single session option which was what I was after and would have appreciated that being at the top of the page.
For a single session entry, it costs £12.99 but the Studio is currently offering 14 day trial of unlimited classes at £19.99 which I went for! Later found out this also includes a 20min massage in the S.Spa – Yay!
I’m a yoga beginner and hadn’t practised for a few months so wasn’t sure how this would go. Marieyama, the manager, was very welcoming and helpful, she gave me a tour around the studio and spa – very clean space and changing rooms were tidy.
In the class were 9 of us including the teacher, Stephane. Good teacher, he made it attainable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. The class was mixed but mainly female. I left feeling calm and awakened.

Yoga Embodied
Meeta attended a Vinyasa flow yoga session.
Booked for a Vinyasa Flow class online. Not cheap at £15 for a drop-in session, though that seems to be the going rate. There is currently an offer of 5 weeks at £65.
On arrival, the room was set up and calming. No instruction was given but just followed instinct and sat down. You were encouraged to bring your own yoga mats, blocks etc but there were plenty there available to use.
Only having practiced Hatha yoga, this class was a bit challenging but Anya encouraged us to go with what felt right for us. Although I don’t think this class would be suitable to a complete beginner. There was a mixture of holding poses and stretching. Together with breathing and meditation.
I did not feel relaxed when I left the studio, but not sure if it was because I had not practiced yoga for a while or this particular style was not for me.
There were 9 of us plus Anya including 2 men. Although it did not bother me I think this should be mentioned on the website in case ladies are looking for female only classes.

The Yoga Edge
Louise attended a Hot Dynamic Yoga session.
This small local studio started in Crystal Palace 3 years ago, and have just opened in Streatham. Just opposite the Royal Mail post-collection centre on Prentis Road, this is a great spot for those centrally located.
I was greeted really warmly by the class instructor.
The studio was lovely and warm apparently this is to allow you to stretch that little bit further whilst detoxifying too. All good for this time of year!
I opted for the Hot Dynamic Yoga at Open Level. I would have opted for a beginner’s class but lunchtimes are ideal for work but they do have a full timetable of classes from early mornings to lunchtimes and of course evening sessions too.
I think if you had never done Yoga before the open level would be a little bit of a struggle but we were all encouraged to work at our pace
It was a mixed class: age, sex, race and gender so did feel really inclusive and there was certainly a lot of love in the air. I left feeling hot, sweaty but full of life!
It was very easy to sign up as a member online and begin booking classes. I picked the drop in rate for £16 but they have 5 star google reviews for both studios and are currently running a great introductory offer of 30 days unlimited yoga for £40.

Yogarise
Louise attended a Dynamic Vinyasa Flow session.
Another new opening for Streatham High Road is the very beautiful Yogarise which has literally just opened its doors on the up and coming destination that is The High Parade. A five-minute walk from Streatham Hill Station this is their second venture having successfully operated in the Bussey Building in Peckham since 2014.
The beautifully equipped studios have fantastic facilities and share their home with Element Fitness and Spinach London so this a real hang out spot as well as a studio and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming.
I took the Dynamic Vinyasa Flow and found the class energetic but achievable. I wouldn’t suggest a total beginner dive straight in but having done yoga before I was aware of the poses and encouraged to take it at my own pace.
I booked via the Yogarise app which was easy to find on the playstore, really easy to sign up and navigate. The only thing that could have made it even easier would be the ability to pay via PayPal but that certainly isnt a criticism.
There are a whole host of sessions from 7.30 in the morning until 8pm in the evening and lots of day time Classes for homeworkers, freelancers and local employees. There is a really broad range of styles and teachers here so it would take a bit of sampling to find the right class for each person but at their amazing introductory offer of just £6 for a drop-in or £52 for 10 off-peak sessions it’s certainly worth giving it a go.

Better Yoga
For those of us at the common end of the High Road (Streatham Common that is!) I was pleasantly surprised to see the wonderful new hot yoga studio at the Leisure Centre. This specially designed studio on the ground floor has heated panels in the ceiling gently warming the room to 32 degrees allowing you to stretch and flow to a new you.
With a selection of classes throughout the week and open from 6am to 10pm there are times to suit everyone. Unfortunately, I was unable to get into one of the classes as they were fully booked (well done all those organised yogi’s!) but as this is the most reasonably priced drop in class I can totally understand why. The leisure centre offers a range of hot yoga and yoga classes and with a monthly class membership at just £30.85 per month, this is a great option for those who fancy trying yoga as part of a new health regime this new year.
