Cuppa with a Copper

12th February 2019 By InStreatham

As part of Lambeth’s and the Metropolitan Police’ strategy to working better with the community to target crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB), this year they introduced ‘A cuppa with a copper’sessions for people to drop in and discuss any concerns they have in their respective communities. These are informal sessions designed for any members of the community to speak to local police officers face to face to report ASB, raise local concerns and enjoy a cuppa in a relaxed environment.
Metropolitan Police Inspector Teresa Hubbard explains how her team works with Lambeth Council to make effective use of community knowledge: “People worry about robbery and burglary but also about noise, anti-social behaviour, and abandoned vehicles – things that impact on day-to-day quality of life. That’s why a multi-handed problem-solving approach works best. Policing isn’t all about arrests. For example, when we say we’re ‘enforcing’ action on rough sleeping, we often mean we’re referring people to the Safer Streets team for help.”Here are the upcoming Cuppa with a Copper times and venues for Streatham in September and October.
This is a great chance for members of the business community to speak to our local police face to face.

Thursday 13th September 19:00 hours Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre
Friday 21st September 09:00 hours The Rookery Cafe Streatham Common Southside
Wednesday 26th September 09:00 hours M&S Cafe
Monday 1st October at 17:00 hours Sainsbury’s Cafe
Tuesday 9th October 09:00 hours Barcelona
Thursday 18th October 18:00 hours Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre
Wednesday 24th October 16:00 hours M&S Cafe
Tuesday 30th October at 17:00 hours Sainsbury’s Café

Business rates Event

12th February 2019 By InStreatham

Rising Rents and Business Rates are damaging the mix of independent shops on our high streets.

They are forcing some of us to relocate, cut back on local staff or the services our customers need. They will force some of us to close.
We want to work with decision makers to ensure that our businesses can thrive, not just survive!

Please join us on Wednesday 12th September from 7:45pm – 9:30pm
At: The Portico Gallery, 23a Knights Hill, West Norwood, SE27 0HS

At this event we will:

  • Hear about work taking place on this issue at a central and local government level.
  • Hear from local shop owners about the issues we face
  • Consider ways that we can put pressure on the Chancellor to include relief to London businesses in the autumn budget

The event will also provide an opportunity to ask questions to key influencers during an panel discussion.

The panel members will include:

  • Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich & West Norwood, Communities and Local Government Select Committee
  • Kieron Williams, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Innovation
  • Fred Cowell, Councillor for Thurlow Park Ward
  • Sue Terpilowski, Federation of Small Businesses, policy lead and business person

It is vital that we gather as much support as we can from businesses across Southwark and Lambeth.

Please RSVP HERE as spaces are limited.

If you have any questions about the event please contact Clare Chamberlain at clare@communitysouthwark.org

Jobs Fair: Would you like some help filling your existing vacancies?

12th February 2019 By InStreatham

Streatham Youth Community Trust (SYCT) is to host a jobs fair on the 29th of September.

Streatham Youth Community Trust is a charity dedicated to meeting the needs of local young people through the provision of a wide range of activities in education and training, personal development and support for disadvantaged groups. Young local leaders have suggested that a jobs fair be organised specifically for young people looking for part time, seasonal and entry level jobs. It is estimated that there are currently 492,000 young people aged 16-24 who are unemployed and approximately.

They would like to invite local employers who have real job opportunities and would consider employing someone under the age of 21. The Jobs Fair is an opportunity for local employers to promote their job opportunities to local young people. It  is  completely  FREE to  attend  to  promote  your  vacancies  or  simply  send  us  your  job  details  and  application  forms  and  the charity  will  promote them for you.

The  jobs  fair  will  target  young  people  under  the  age  of  24  who  might  be  looking  for  their  first  steps  into  the  world  of  work,  students  looking  for  seasonal  or  part  time  work  and  young  people  looking  for  a  change. This event is a multi-sector event and will be sorted into the following sectors:

  • Blue: Bars and restaurants
  • Yellow: Sports and Leisure
  • Green: Manual such as motor mechanics
  • Purple: Public Sector and transport
  • Orange: Retail
  • Red: Office

Each sector will have an SYCT or partner to represent that sector and promote the jobs on offer. It’d be great if employers could attend on the day however as it is a working day for many, SYCT would be happy to promote vacancies and hand out applications forms. Mini workshops will run throughout the afternoon related to applying for and securing a job.

The fair will take place on Saturday 29th September between 2pm – 5pm at Streatham Youth Club, Conyers Road, Streatham.

This  is  about  Streatham  pulling  together  to  create  a  stronger  community  by  supporting  local  employers  to  employ  local  people.    If  you  would  like  any  more  information  or  to  notify  us  of  your  interest,  please  email  angie@syct.org.uk

Cleaner Air in Streatham Hill – How can you help?

12th February 2019 By InStreatham

CLEANER AIR VILLAGES

Our seminar with Cross River Partnerships on July 30th focused on how businesses can work together to reduce air pollution on Streatham Hill. The project, which is funded by central government, was set up to hear local views about deliveries of goods and services in the area, what works and what doesn’t and how potential solutions could look like.

Streatham Hill had been identified by Lambeth Council and the GLA as a pollution hotspot in the borough and deliveries of goods and services significantly contribute to this. There are many things a business can do to improve air quality for your staff as well as customers while reducing costs at the same time.

In case you were unable to attend, please find attached a copy of the presentation below.

You can contact us to get involved or contact Kate at katefenton@crossriverpartnership.org

Local business help and volunteers needed at St Michael’s Fellowship

12th February 2019 By InStreatham

Local charity St Michael’s Fellowship is asking local people to donate any spare packs of nappies they have to help them support local families in need.

“We know lots of parents, grandparents and carers might have spare packets they no longer need lying around in bottom drawers and the back of cupboards. Nappies are really expensive and make a huge difference to a family’s budget.” Says Hillary Box the charity’s fundraising manager.

Along with nappies they are also interested in any women’s sanitary products which also have a huge impact on a family’s monthly budget, especially if they have teenage girls.

They would like local businesses to help by liking their Facebook, twitter or instragram pages and sharing the posts about the campaign to their customers who might be interesting in helping local families not as lucky as them.

St Michael’s are also looking for volunteers or local businesses to help create a sensory play room in one of the residential houses where some of the most vulnerable children and families in the country come to stay.

They are trying to teach better parenting and showing how play can help babies and children grow and bond with their parents. Lots of the parents and children they support have learning difficulties and would really benefit from this space.

The sensory room is a project to adapt one of their spare bedrooms into a room that families can use with their babies and young children to enrich their experience of the discovering the world around them. In the sensory room, parents will learn more about their children’s development and explore different ways of playing and interacting with them.

“We have a room filled to the brim with furniture that needs sorting, some walls that need painting. If you or a group of you might be interested in helping with this soon, please get in touch too.” said Ellie a Family Support worker at the house. “We will use the space to promote families’ sensory learning.  This is a great way of helping parent and baby to bond, which is so important in the child’s mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing, from the earliest stages to adulthood. All five senses are massively important in promoting children’s play, learning and development. The more we can help parents explore those with their child, the brighter the future can be for them both.”

For vulnerable babies and children, a sensory room can be a special place where they feel safe and secure to learn and explore the world around. It can also represent a safe space for parents to develop a special bond with their child.

Is your team looking for some time to bond? Would you like to do it while helping people in the local community? Maybe you could spare a few hours on Sunday September 16th. Volunteers are needed to help sort through all the donations of clothes. The clothes made into well-presented boys and girls bundles for local families
in need. For more information click here
