Licensing Information for Businesses

Tables and Chairs

A License is needed to place tables and chairs outside of your property and approval may not always given. The application must always be submitted and the application fee paid even if you only plan to have the first two chairs on display which are free. Above two chairs a fee per chair is payable within specific hours.

Visit Lambeth website for more info.

A Boards

The entire A23 is a zero tolerance zone for A Boards. Even if you include an A Board in your application for tables and chairs Condition 16 of the tables and chairs license specifies that this permission excludes A Boards and any other materials not specified in the license.

Shop Front License

Legislation allows for the Highways Authority to require businesses to pay for both Tables & Chairs and Shop Front Licenses if they wish to display items within 0.7m of the Highway.

Historically Lambeth hasn’t charged for either Tables & Chairs Licensing or Shop Front Licenses for businesses that have been able to demonstrate that their business curtilage (Land included in the floorplan of your premises) is included in the deeds of the premises in their lease.

Whilst this position hasn’t changed if you have received a fine for land that you consider to be owned by you will need to send TfL proof of the deeds including the floorplan or they will complete a detailed Land Registry Search to determine ownership of Private Land.

Lambeth Owned Roads

TfL take a zero tolerance approach to A-boards on roads they manage.  Lambeth currently take a different approach whereby we do not enforce for or prohibit the use of A-boards unless they are causing an obstruction. The use of A-boards does not form part of a table and chairs license.

Notes: Lambeth is responsible for processing Licenses but TfL are responsible for enforcing licenses. Lambeth will visit premises to ensure they have the correct licenses and make suggestions if considered to be needed.
