After 4 years and 5 planning applications, the Megabowl development was approved in 2009. The plan includes demolishing the existing buildings excluding the 4 units on the front left from the Co-op shop and and the MegaBowl frontage and erect an eight story tall structure including 247 apartments, a retail superstore (ground floor and basement) plus a community arts centre with a performance area. The owners have recently submitted a new application for a planning variation to reduce the performance area size and increase the number of car parking spaces. Recent information suggests the owners’ agents have increased their offer to businesses in the affected buildings to vacate their premises. To date though, only the former Job Centre premises has been demolished to make a car park.
