FAQs

InStreatham has been delivering for Streatham High Road and Hill since 2013. Funded through a levy paid by local businesses, this generates an income of more than £1.25m over each five-year lifespan which is invested back into the area ensuring the success of Streatham and our business community.

The Next Five Years

In our third term we will continue to provide all the services you have come to know and love but now there’s an opportunity to take this to the next level and transform Streatham into something brighter and bigger. A brand, a buzzing social destination, a centre for business, a thriving local economy, a tight-knit community, a varied entertainment and hospitality location and a place that excites and brings in new visitors.

Our work is split into four key areas; celebrate, destination, future and sustainable Streatham. You can find out more about what we have achieved locally since 2013 and what more you can expect in the next five years in our business plan below. We will be asking all eligible businesses with a rateable value over £7,000 in the BID area to vote on this proposal in January 2023 so we can continue to deliver for Streatham.

FAQs

What is InStreatham? Expand

InStreatham BID is an independent not-for-profit organisation working for the collective benefit of businesses in the area. It was set up by local businesses to increase the attractiveness and appeal of Streatham as a commercial destination, to futureproof the area and attract inward Investment.

Why is InStreatham running a ballot in February 2023? Expand

Under BID legislation, all BIDs are required to hold a renewal ballot every five years, giving businesses the opportunity to vote if they’d like their town or city to be a Business Improvement District. InStreatham has successfully completed two five-year terms. Our current term comes to an end in March 2023, at which time all our activities will cease if we do not renew. If InStreatham is to remain as a BID, a postal ballot of eligible businesses must be held by Lambeth Council to determine whether it will continue its activities for a further five-year term. The ballot will ask a simple question: Are you in favour of the proposals for the InStreatham Business Improvement District (BID)? In advance of the ballot, you will receive a letter inviting you to nominate who should vote on behalf of your organisation. You can also nominate someone else to represent your business; a proxy voter.

What determines if the ballot is a success? Expand

In order for Streatham BID to continue operating for another five-year term, the ballot must be successful on two counts. The majority of businesses must vote ‘yes’ and of the businesses who vote in favour of the BID, their combined rateable value must exceed the combined rateable value of the businesses that vote ‘no’.

Who will carry out the BIDs services, projects and events if the BID isn’t renewed? Expand

No one. There is no alternative organisation to Streatham BID.

Who funds the BID? Expand

The BID is funded by businesses occupying a property with a rateable value of £7,000 or more in the BIDs defined operating area. Businesses pay 1.5% into the BID through an annual levy collected by Lambeth Council with a maximum cap of £15,000 per single hereditament. If the rateable value of your premises is £20,000, you will pay £300 p/a. An annual inflationary increase will be applied of no more than the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and at the discretion of the BID Board.

These funds are spent on delivering improvements to Streatham in line with the BID’s business plan.

Do all businesses pay the same amount? Expand

No, because all rateable values are different. Each business contributes a levy equal to 1.5% of their premises' rateable value.

Is my business in the BID area? Expand

The InStreatham BID area covers the High Road from Telford Avenue to Streatham Common South. You can view the full list of streets on the BID website.

Who governs the BID? Expand

Streatham BID is governed by a Board of voluntary directors representing levy-paying businesses or organisations within the BID boundary. The Board is responsible for the strategic and financial management of the BID.

Who delivers the BIDs initiatives? Expand

The BID employs a team who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the BID and delivery of projects, services and events.

What forms of communication are in place with the BID levy payers? Expand

All InStreatham members receive an annual report with their levy bills. Newsletters are sent out monthly and the area is connected via a series of information sharing groups.

The council’s role Expand

The council is by law the billing authority for any business improvement district, which means it is responsible for the collection of BID levies. InStreatham BID provides additional services to the area and should not be confused with local authorities who provide statutory services. While the levy bill is based on 1.5% of the rateable value of your business, it is separate from the Business Rates Bill. All BIDs in the UK are governed by regulations which are set by central Government.

How do I vote? Expand

You will receive your ballot papers by post in January from Lambeth Council Electoral Services. Simply put a cross in the voting box then place the ballot paper in the pre-paid envelope provided and return before voting closes!
