Apply to the Big Shift Business Parklet scheme!

20th December 2023 By lewis

The Big Shift Business Parklet programme goes live today after a successful pilot project in Clapham Old Town (see attached image). Lambeth Council is inviting businesses to apply for their very own parklet to give them more space, raise their visibility or create new cycle storage space to attract new customers.

The Big Shift Business Parklet scheme is open to businesses, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), private organisations, schools, and charities who want to apply for their own kerbside space to improve their local area.

The parklets can be used for a variety of uses from creating more space for the business, to adding outdoor seating and tables, creating a community hub and attract new customers. They would be established in the kerbside – the space between the road and pavement – to provide extra outdoor commercial space.

How it works:

  1. Complete business parklet expression of interest form – which includes submitting rough designs and a neighbourhood support form.
  2. Shortlisting process by the Council
  3. Apply for table and chairs/ pavement licence (where necessary)
  4. Shortlisted businesses provide their detailed designs
  5. Traffic order and relevant audits completed by Lambeth Council
  6. Build
  7. Businesses maintain the parklet through its lifespan and arrange removal when necessary.

The Council will support shortlisted applicants through the process, including advice on licencing and elements of the design and will support with the costs towards:

  • Traffic Order costs
  • Road safety audit
  • Officer time
  • Signs and lines

Businesses are encouraged to be creative and innovative to transform the kerbside. The costs payable by the business:

  • Supply/leasing of the parklet platform & installation. Parklets can come in various forms, sizes and materials so prices can also vary. Prices can start from £5K and above.
  • Items such as planters, barriers and seating
  • Maintenance
  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Apply for a tables and chairs licence (where required)
  • Removal/replacement at the end of the parklet’s life

Businesses may apply for a parklet individually or as a collective in their location.

The opportunity to apply will be open until the 1st of April with two shortlisting windows on the 12 January and 1 April 2024.

For information on shortlisting criteria and how to apply, visit https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/businessparklets

American Express Launches Grant Programme for London’s Small Restaurants

13th June 2023 By InStreatham

Who Can Apply: London-based small food businesses including restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs that are not part of a franchise with more than 5 locations and with annual revenues below £1 million

When to Apply: From 1st June to 7th July 2023

Grant Amount: £11,500 for a maximum 6 businesses

Additional Information: To download FAQs click here. To download the Terms and Conditions click here.

Where to Apply: Here

From the 1st June, independent restaurant owners across London can apply for a share of almost £70,000 to help grow their business through an American Express-supported grant programme, run by the International Downtown Association (IDA) Foundation in partnership with ATCM.

The programme aims to highlight the important role independent restaurants play in their communities and provide them with valuable support to succeed.

Six eligible restaurants of community significance will receive £11,500 each to help them make critical improvements that boost their business, such as enhancing digital capabilities, revitalising their dining spaces and kitchens, or making other physical improvements.

London restaurant owners can learn more about the programme, eligibility and apply for a grant here. The deadline for applications is the 7th July 2023.

The grant programme comes at a time when hospitality operators are facing a challenging market and rising costs across all areas of their business. However, new research from American Express shows that diners continue to be supportive of small restaurants.

The study of 2,000 consumers found that almost three-quarters (73%) believe it’s important to spend with small restaurants as a way of supporting local high streets; with the same proportion (73%) saying these venues are vital to maintaining a vibrant and diverse local community.

Following a positive dining experience, 8 in 10 (79%) say they would recommend a small restaurant to friends and family and two-thirds (67%) would visit more often.

David Downey, Executive Director, IDA Foundation, said: “As we launch the Backing International Small Restaurants programme for the second year, we recognise the vital role that small, independent restaurants play in our communities. This programme is a demonstration of our commitment to supporting these businesses and helping them thrive and succeed in the wake of ongoing economic challenges worldwide. It is an honour to implement this innovative work with the generous support of American Express and partnership of the ATCM.”

Ojay McDonald, ATCM Chief Executive, said: “London is home to one of the world’s best hospitality scenes. This scheme from American Express provides a golden opportunity for innovation from those business owners with great ideas on how to evolve but who lack the capital to be able to invest. This programme can help turn the potential that exists with our small food businesses and convert that into reality as part of a global movement for innovation.

We are delighted to support this.”

Dan Edelman, General Manager, UK Merchant Services at American Express, added: “We are proud of our record of championing small businesses and the important contribution they make to their local communities. Hospitality businesses continue to face challenging times so we hope this grant funding will offer a welcome boost.”

Backing International Small Restaurants is part of American Express’ ‘Backing Small’ strategy, which supports small business owners and entrepreneurs across the world, and includes grant programmes, mentoring support, and technical assistance.

The programme compliments American Express’ Shop Small campaign, a global movement to spotlight and support small, independent businesses, along with its support of Small Business Saturday, of which American Express remains founder and the Principal Supporter in the UK.

Owners of restaurants and other hospitality venues in London with a foodservice offer can apply online until the 7th July 2023. Applicants will need to explain how they will use the grant to drive their business forward. Recipients will be announced and awarded the funding later this summer.

2022 grant recipient Valcie McIntosh, owner of Papas Café in Brixton Park, south London, explains the impact of the funding: “The grant gave us the opportunity to update and purchase much-needed items for the cafe.

Our customers have paid us lovely compliments on the new and improved interior and the equipment has brightened up the outside space, making a huge difference to the local community.”
